Did you know that by simply letting the grass grow, you can benefit biodiversity in many ways?
That's what Terra Botanica has decided to do for the third year running, with the return of No Mowing Month!
What is Mow-Free Month?
This trend, which comes straight from the UK, involves not mowing the grass for a month.
👉 Alain, landscape team leader, explains it to you on video:
Why let grass grow?
By letting the grass grow, nature takes over: you can see buttercups appearing buttercups, or poppiesand dandelions and many other plants. In some areas, you'll also spot numerous insects and small animals that will find refuge in the tall grasses.
But the happiest of all is the bee. Yes, it's in spring that flowers produce the nectar that bees come to collect. The more flowers there are, the more bees come to gather nectar.
According to the English NGO Plantlife, "100 square meters of unmown lawn would produce enough pollen to feed six mining bee brood cells and enough nectar to meet the needs of six bumblebees a day".
And beyond biodiversity, the month without mowing is also good for the environment:
✅ Reduced pollution from mowing
✅ Water savings thanks to reduced watering (up to one month less watering in some areas).
✅ Soil preservation and increased resistance to drought
Morgan, the park's landscape gardener, explains that each area has its own specific features: "some parts of the park, like those around the ball, are left unmowed to encourage flower growth, while others, more isolated, are perfect refuges for insects and small animals."
So if you're passing through the park this month, take the time to look at these grassy areas... you'll see all the benefits of the month without mowing.
